Technical Insight & Common Failure Symptoms
The gas valve controls the flow of gas to the burner as part of the boiler's normal operating sequence. Its operation is coordinated with the appliance's control and safety systems.
Possible symptoms that may require investigation of the gas valve or associated components include:
-
Boiler failing to ignite
-
Burner failing to establish correctly
-
Intermittent burner operation
-
Boiler failing to respond to heating demand
-
Boiler entering a safety lockout
-
Gas flow to the burner not operating as expected
These symptoms do not necessarily confirm a faulty gas valve, as similar problems can be caused by ignition components, electrical controls, gas supply issues or other parts of the boiler. Correct professional diagnosis should be carried out before replacement.
Safety Advice
Gas valves are safety-critical components within a gas appliance and must only be diagnosed, removed, installed or adjusted by a Gas Safe registered engineer who is suitably qualified for the appliance and work being undertaken.
The appliance and gas supply must be safely isolated before any work is carried out. The manufacturer's servicing instructions must be followed, and all required gas-tightness, combustion and operational safety checks must be completed before the appliance is returned to service.
